Simplified Blues (8 bars)

The most direct blues in the world. 8 bars. 3 dominant chords.

8-bar blues: condensed version of standard blues, very common in folk blues and early rock. Easier to memorize than 12-Bar, equally effective. Typical of Robert Johnson songs and Delta blues.

🎵 A Shorter Structure

Not all blues are 12 bars. The 8-bar blues is very common in folk and country blues. It is more direct and the phrases feel faster.

Typical structure:

  1. I - V (Question)
  2. IV - IV (Answer)
  3. I - V - I - V (Quick resolution)

🎹 In C

  • C7 (I)
  • G7 (V) - It goes to the dominant much earlier!
  • F7 (IV)
  • C7 (I)

💡 Tip

Because it is shorter, the cycle repeats faster. It is excellent for practicing improvisation because you get more frequent chances to "start over".
