Scale guide

Ab Major - Major Scale

In one sentence: Four flats: Bb, Eb, Ab and Db. Ab Major is INCREDIBLY WARM and deep. Chopin adored it without limits—he wrote his Impromptu op. 90 and Ballade op. 47 in this key. Beethoven wrote his Piano Concerto No. 4 here. Its sonic richness is incomparable. Technically challenging: many black keys require maximum muscle relaxation to avoid tension. Perfect for developing deep sonority and ability to 'sing' on the piano.

COMMON MISTAKES
  • Playing without stable pulse.
  • Confusing the characteristic degrees of the scale.

SCALE COMPARISON
  • Minor: changes 3, 6, 7 and sounds darker.
  • Mixolydian: same base but with b7.
